Poetry Sunday: A Most Extra-Ordinary Life

A Most Extra-Ordinary Life

Though your smile fades from this place

it shines deep inside of me and all

who have known you, loved you.

Your life’s breath, extinguished here on Earth,

now a forever light that burns brighter through me,

around me and into the ethos.

I quiet to hear the faint whispers of your voice

telling of a passion for life;

your legacy I now embrace.

And I will sing your song to capture it forever;

to share it in these words, in a smile,

or a hug or a deed most kind.

As tears splash this page, they are joyful

celebrating the ordinary life of a most extra-ordinary woman~

whose greatest gift is enduring love.

This poem is a remembrance for my Aunt Mary who passed away July 3rd.  A dear friend said to me that dwelling on missing her would only bring sadness and depression….but celebrating her light would bring me solace and peace.  I liked that idea and this poem came to me the next day.  You can read my tribute post to my aunt here.

I am joining  Poets United for their Poetry Pantry linkup.  July 12th was my 3rd blog anniversary….what an amazing 3 years of creativity it has been.

The picture at the top is of my Aunt Mary with a few sweet peas, snapdragons and lavender.  The vase below is more of these same sweet flowers.

  1. I like the way you have celebrated your aunt’s light. Thinking of the impact she had on you, thinking of her goodness is a positive way to deal with grief, I think. She has left you a rich legacy, and as time goes on you will treasure this poem more and more.

  2. What a beautiful tribute to a wonderful woman, who knew the beauty of life and passed it on. I love the images you created…….and congrats on three wonderful years! Your aunt would want you to drink deeply and joyously of this life she loved so much.

    1. Thank you so much Sherry…this means so much to me. And yes she would want me to ‘drink deeply and joyously of this life’….and what beautiful words to share with me! Much love!

  3. What a beautiful tribute to your much loved Aunt Mary! “Our ancestors dwell in the attics of our brains, as they do in the spiraling chain of knowledge hidden in every cell of our bodies” (~Shirley Abbott).

  4. You’ve already been carrying her lessons and Light, she gave them to you. And now your relationship deepens in the absence of corporeal presence. You write this so lovingly.

  5. Oh, wow. This is beautiful:

    “celebrating the ordinary life of a most extra-ordinary woman~
    whose greatest gift is enduring love”

    I’m so sorry for your loss.

  6. When we lose someone we love and it hurts, it is because they taught us so much on the way to live, to laugh and love. This is such a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to your Aunt Mary.
